Who on earth doesn’t want to live peacefully? Tell me the name of one person you know, who in their heart doesn’t want mental peace. Trust me even the supporters of violence ultimately seek peace in their life. They might be misguided, as of now, but in the end, it is the mental peace that matters the most. Hence, it would be right on my part to say that we all are striving to attain mental peace in our respective lives. However, the big question is that where and how to achieve “Mental Peace”?
Before we embark on our mission to unearth “Mental Peace”, it is important to understand the meaning of these two words. Here, Mental means, of or relating to the mind. And, Peace means, the absence of mental stress or anxiety. [Reference: Word Web, the free dictionary]. Peace is categorised into two types i.e. External Peace and Internal Peace. External Peace is a wide term, which covers up the entire peace present outside of our body, while, Internal Peace is restricted to the peace that lies within our body. “Mental Peace is nothing but internal peace”.
While external peace is something which is not in our control. It would be foolish on our part if we try or even think to control everything that is going on in the outside world. It is an unachievable task. On the other hand, internal peace is totally in our control. We are solely responsible for our internal peace. We are the drivers of our mind and it’s our sole responsibility to guide it towards attaining the state of mental peace.
Where to find the mental peace? – We tend to search for mental peace in the outside world, whereas, the reality is that it lies within ourselves. When we know that our mind is within us, then it is but obvious, that the peace related to our mind will also be within us. The day we realize that our mental peace is not dependent on any kind of external factors, will be the day of enlightenment. Everything that occurs inside our body is controlled by our mind. So if the mind is stable and peaceful, then nothing in this world can deflect us. And, this non-deflecting state is achieved by one and only Mental Peace.
Now I am sure you must be thinking that is it even possible to achieve mental peace in this chaotic world? Well, it is definitely possible, but, only if we know how to achieve mental peace. Once we achieve mental peace, then even in those moments when external peace is absent, we will be able to stay unaffected by the chaos surrounding us. As it is, mental peace is put to its real test only in the crisis situation.
How to achieve mental peace? – To achieve mental peace, firstly, we have to be aware of every sensation occurring on and inside our body. Sensations result from any kind of physical or mental activity happening at that moment. Secondly, we have to keep reminding ourselves that we are not going to be affected by anything that is happening around us. Sensations could bring happiness or sadness, but we have to make sure that we don’t get deflected in either of the situations. We have to ensure that we don’t get excited on a happy feeling, nor feel sad in an unfavourable situation. If we are able to do this then we are at mental peace.
Herewith, do note that this is definitely not an easy task and is an ongoing process. One can only master it through constant practice. It’s easier said than done. But mind it this is the only way to achieve mental peace in the real sense. Do remember that no one else can do that for us. So, each one of us has to find our own mental peace inside us. As and when we attain this stage we will realize that “Mental Peace is the ultimate state of a peaceful mind, body and the soul”.
